How NOT to Release Emotions

Monday, June 1st, 2009

What are 3 things most people do wrong when they try to release emotions?

worry

If you have been seeking release from your painful emotions you may have tried these methods and been left feeling more of a failure because you couldn’t make them work. I hope you will draw comfort from learning that it is not you. it is not your fault. Here is why many therapies simply don’t work or why you haven’t been able to heal yet.

1. EXPRESS THEM.

Many therapies focus on crying, talking about your problem or even shouting and screaming. Rather than releasing them this actually reinforces them in your neurology. Every time you think a thought, feel an emotion or recall a memory, the neurons fire in your brain along the same original path. Each time you do this you will actually be strengthening that path, making it easier for that pathway to be fired up next time. This is why small events in the present can trigger past trauma. Expressing emotions does not release them.

2. SUPPRESS THEM.

This is also called denial and we do this in a variety of ways. Most people will simply kid themselves or deny (hence the term) that they have any problems at all. Often emotions are suppressed or anaesthetised out of consciousness with addictions. Smoking, drinking, video games, TV, eating too much or a compulsion to eat a particular thing, even caffeine will anaesthetise your pain.

However, the pain and the problems are still there. The neurons are still firing, but out of your conscious awareness. Before you can release the problem you need to be honest with yourself about how you feel. It is OK to feel bad, and you can’t let go of something until you know you are holding it. How do you know if you have suppressed emotions? Here are some telltale signs:

You overreact to small things

This is known as emotional leakage. The emotions, denied in one area of your life, literally spill out in other areas. So if you are irritable, overly sentimental, get hurt by small things, even road rage, are signs that you could be suppressing emotions in another area.

Feeling tired – it takes energy to carry emotions (that’s why it’s called emotional baggage) and it takes even more energy to suppress them. If you are lacking in energy, need more sleep than most people or just have no get up and go. Many of my past clients were suffering from chronic fatigue or ME, which disappeared once they released their emotions.

You have physical pain with no diagnosable cause.

Back pain, headaches even migraines are an example of this. You have become so used to suppressing your emotions that the spill out as physical pain. Your body is telling you something in the only way it knows how. So pay attention.

Many therapies don’t have an effective technique for bringing emotions to the surface and many therapists are actually afraid of provoking their clients emotions. This is the hardest part of my job as a therapist because I need to activate YOUR pain, which in turn, as an empathy, I feel too. But you cannot release emotions you are not aware of.

3. UNDERSTAND THEM

Do you know someone who knows exactly WHY they have their problems? They know the cause, the events that led to them, how it all happened. They will know and fully understand all the patterns and triggers, and often they will find every opportunity to share them with anyone who seems even remotely interested, they will launch into their “story”. The problem is they still have the problem. Knowing why you have the problem and understanding it is a bit like knowing your car doesn’t work because its fan belt has broken, but not actually replacing the fan belt.

None of the above is good. None works. None will make you feel better in the long term.

The way to release your emotions is to do just that, release them.

Unfortunately we have been conditioned and trained to hold on to our emotions. The media, particularly soap operas and films, have tricked us into believing that once you have a problem you will always have it and the best you can hope for is to get used to the pain.

I would like to share with you that this does NOT have to be the case. You CAN release your pain and trauma so that is simply no longer there. This is a process, a technique, that literally reprograms your neurology so that those emotional pathways don’t run anymore.  If you want to release your pain – then why not sign up for Emotional Clearing? Or if you want to make sense of your own pain and become a therapist to enable OTHERS to release their painful emotions then why not take our Esoteric NLP training. The world is crying out for help right now.

Own your own emotions

No one can make you feel anything. Every time you feel anything it is due to your unconscious programming. Bringing them in to consciousness is the first stage of the healing process. To do this, keep a journal of your emotional triggers. Every time you feel a negative emotion write down:
a. What was the emotion?
b. What was the trigger event?
c. What did you say to yourself at the time?
d. What did you think at the time?
e. How did what happened cause you to choose to feel that emotion?

Are we nearly there yet?

Listen to this post here:

MP3 File

Anyone who has kids, knows any kids or has ever been a kid (OK that’s everyone) will have heard the cry from the backseat of the car “are we nearly there yet?”

It seems to be hardwired into us to want to get “there”, wherever “there” is for you. No-one seems to enjoy the journey. Yet isn’t that what life is all about?

Why did you choose to be born or incarnate? Was it so that you could charge headlong towards your death? No.

Most philosophies are based around the principle of evolution, and believe that we incarnate so that we can evolve. So does that mean we should be charging headlong towards some evolutionary goal that might be called “Enlightenment”. NO not that either.

The purpose of life is to be evolving, not be evolved. There is no “there”. The journey is all there is.

Outrageous goals

Last week I set myself an outrageous goal of getting 100 sign ups to my SSCP preview teleseminar. I didn’t quite make it. I got 76 at final count, with 45 dialling in to listen live.

So did I achieve my goal? Not quite. I was 24 short.

Now there are two reactions I could have.

1. I could go into despair and say – how terrible, I set a goal and didn’t get it. I could easily choose to feel really bad about not reaching my target. Or….

2. I could choose to feel really happy that I had increased my personal best for a teleseminar by 3.5 times. I could choose to believe that this is enough and a fantastic step forward in my business and life.

The reason I’m thinking about the whole idea of getting “there” is that on Saturday Psycademy is 5 years old. On any anniversary I tend to think back to what I’ve achieved over the last year, and what I’ve achieved in the last 5 years.

It has been an amazing journey. Not always easy, not always fun. I had to remortgage my house 3 times to set it up. I had some Christian fundamentalists threaten to take out an injunction to keep me out of their venue. Apparently I AM the devil for suggesting that there are other ways to God, and when I went in to enquire if I could rent their hall out for a training, in a very loving Christian way they had their security guards frog march me out of the building. And I still get people telling my courses “are all b*****s”, or giving me a hard time when they don’t agree with my newsletter content. I tell them where the unsubscribe link is.

BUT – despite all the trials, tests, tribulations and troubles – I am still here and yes. I have made it. Where have I made it to? Well… HERE of course.

Here I am, gathering more clients, more students, my database constantly growing. I get wonderful feedback from my students, clients and colleagues. I’ve been featured in the press from Psychologies to the Sun, Marie Claire to Business press. I’ve even been on the TV (only sky) and the radio.

Have I gotten to where I want to be? No, not yet, but that’s because all goals are like the horizon. They are always moving further away. We need to set higher and higher targets AND we need to celebrate our achievements.

Happy people focus on both what they want to achieve AND celebrate what they already HAVE achieved.

So I am celebrating my small achievement, of bringing Psycademy into existence and persevering with it through the challenges to get to where I am.

If you are reading this and like my newsletters, or anything about Psycademy – I’m going to ask a small favour – just send a little message back saying “HURRAH!” and if you want and have time I invite you to share with me some of your own successes from the past 5 years. Just post here on this blog.

And on that note HURRAH!!

 This issues top tip:

  • 1. Set an outrageous goal for the future and enjoy the journey and all the steps you take towards achieving that goal.
  • 2. Think back to where you were at some point in the past and notice how far you have come. Celebrate that achievement.

Better Business Practice: Raising your Game

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

The credit crunch has undoubtedly left many business owners feeling stressed and loosing sleep about how to manage a thriving business on an even tighter shoestring. It is always better to raise your inner threshold so that you can cope with more stress.

One of the most frequent questions I am asked is ‘why is it that some people can handle stress better than others?’ My answer is that everyone has their own unique inner threshold, which determines how stressed we let ourselves get and how we deal with it, and this is no different in business life.

The most common problem faced by business owners is balancing their perception about how much they can cope with and when they need to buy in external help, be it freelance or permanent employees. Whilst this is not a problem in itself, when the economy begins to shift and costs go up, employees can put additional strain on the business and threaten its ability to operate as the market continues to shrink. This is why it is crucial to work out exactly how much you can manage before you take on additional staff.

Are you working  beyond your inner threshold?

The typical symptoms of being beyond your threshold include; problems concentrating, lack of focus, not getting things done, being clumsy and accident prone, poor sleep, inability to relax, minor illness, irritability, aggression and angry outbursts for small things.

There are many things that contribute to a reduced inner threshold and these include; confused unfocused thinking, unresolved negative emotions, unresolved events from the past, inner conflict, limiting beliefs, failure to take action and poor physical condition.

These things take up your valuable mind and thinking space, as the more mental clutter you have the less capacity you have for creative thinking, problem solving and inspired decision making. If it gets really bad you will find yourself unable to focus on important information being given to you or current events. You might even miss something vital; this is one way that accidents happen.

To raise your threshold you could heal up emotions from the past. I strongly advise releasing them using a proven technique such as Time Line Therapy (TM) or Higher Self Therapy. Rather than simply suppressing (ignoring) or expressing (talking about them) these two techniques actually RELEASE the emotions. Although suppression or expression are more common they have been proven to be ineffective at raising your inner threshold. Unresolved events from the past also affect your threshold as you will always have that particular event replaying in your mind and you will sometimes find it occurs at inappropriate times e.g. at work, in a meeting, during a speech etc.

Coping with a busy business

First and foremost, you need to be able to figure out what tasks you should focus on most i.e. the ones which will benefit you most. You should also take time to meditate or sit in silence so you can gather thoughts together and to push negative thoughts out, this will allow you to concentrate more on your work and with that slightly shorter list of tasks you can do it easily by yourself/within your team.

If you find yourself feeling a bit down and energy-less try doing some exercise, as the mind and the body effect each other, so by increasing your physical strength you’re also building up your mental strength. Exercising has many neurological benefits including triggering the reduction of stress hormones and the production of endorphins plus other “happy” hormones and neurotransmitters.

Also, try spending 10-30 minutes sitting in silence, this will remove all of your mental clutter and make you feel a lot more mentally lighter, also another quick tip is too look up when you feel upset because looking down takes you into your emotions.

How is your inner threshold? Are you above it? If you think you are, don’t panic, it can be raised and you can start to get back in control of your life.
